Case 39 and calling out your fear

I watched Case 39 with Renée Zellweger over the weekend. I really liked the way they set it up. I don't want to ruin the movie- because I do recommend watching it. But I can tell you that there is this evil force (big surprise). And what becomes apparent as the movie progresses is that this evil force preys on people's fears. In fact, all of its power over people is leveraged through their fear.

It offers a great metaphor. If you are allowing someone or something to control you, there must be something that you are afraid of. And if you do not empower evil by being afraid, it cannot touch you.

Not that it's a new concept. We have long been aware that there are predatory advertisers, politicians, bosses, and fear-mongers that have controlled people through fear. Most forms of abuse, in fact, perpetuate themselves through fear.

But this offers the possibility of personal empowerment. When you recognize that you are allowing yourself to be controlled by something, look at what the fear is that is driving you. Challenge it. Call it out. When your fear dissipates, other people's ability to control you will too. In a way, the evil force did you a favor- it pointed out your fear so you could set yourself free.

So next time you are being pursued by an evil force, do not run away. Rather, check your fear. Turn and look directly into the face of evil and yell (dramatically), "Listen you son-of-a-bitch, I'm not afraid of you anymore." Then kick its ass and let it fall to the bottom of the precipice- along with your fear.

If it works for Sigourney Weaver and Bruce Willis- there's no reason it can't work for you.
